Originally based on plans of the architect , it was constructed in 1943 by to shelter up to 3,000 train passengers. The tours start every half hour in English and German. The first ever permanent exhibition ran for four years, before Sammlung Boros 2 opened in 2012, where even more works from his impressive collection we added. In 2001, real estate investor Nippon Development Corporation GmbH bought the building from the government. After the war it was used as a prisoner-of-war camp. The bunker, with its two metre thick walls, was constructed particularly for the protection of up to three thousand train passengers, which is where it takes its alternative name as the Reichsbahnbunker from.

The Boros Collection is a private art collection in Berlin stored at a building known as the Bunker. They often seemed curious and confused. The building and history of the bunker is super interesting. The way Mr Boros has changed this place makes me very excited. Apparently, Christian and his wife actually live up there. After extensive renovations that ended in 2008, the building now houses the Boros collection of contemporary art, which includes sculptures, installations, and light performance pieces by some of Europe's most prolific artists working today. The grey, masculine building still bears the bullet hole scars, and even today, this is not the kind of museum you can just idle into on some Wednesday afternoon.

Built in 1943 by the Nazis as an air raid shelter, the bunker has had various uses over the years before being bought by Christian Boros and converted into a gallery space to house his private collection of contemporary art. Christian Boros acquired the bunker in 2003 to house his art and built a glass penthouse for his family. The first presentation of works from the Boros Collection in the Bunker ran from 2008 to 2012 and attracted 120,000 visitors in over 7,500 guided tours.
